The entire universe belongs to the dancer. If you don’t dance, you won’t know what will come to pass.
-Jesus

Dance invites us to take up space in the world with confidence, conviction and service. It’s exhilarating, joyous, sacred, sensual, transformative, communal, and disruptive. Dance makes us whole and brings us into rhythm with others. Though resilient, adaptable, and flexible, dance also breaks the rules. In dance, polarities unite and birth art. Dance is universal. Dance is freedom. Dance is the hope for our humanity if we accept the invitation to dance our lives.

Experience Banafsheh’s transformational teaching in a fusion of passionate yet peaceful dance to embody Spirit. Explore the secrets of dance technique and philosophy as a conscious vehicle to come in touch with who we TRULY are and can offer in this time of infinite potential and need. Discover how dance and movement can shift, influence and shape consciousness and the environment.

From high-powered guided, and free-style dance to the deep serenity of whirling, and vocal training, take a journey in your inner terrain with Tony Khalife’s blend of Middle Eastern and Indian trance music. Feel your fullest presence in the Here and Now with movement and voice work, luscious and devotion that bring you in touch with your core – peaceful, centered, strong, vibrant, open, free, and in community with others.

By the end of the workshop, I was present in every cell and I enjoyed being a fluid body. I have been in all sorts of classes but in no class whatsoever was there the opportunity to express oneself. To move as one is called to, as one feels like and to explore deeper and deeper one’s own body language and what it says. This workshop allows that.
Gida Hussami, workshop participant, Body of Light, Schweibenalp, Switzerland, 2018

My experience was deeply nurturing and connecting to all I am. As I dropped into my body, whirled and vocalized I kept hearing “Lay your head in my lap” from the Divine Mother. The workshop and surroundings allowed me to dive into the divinity I am, aligning with my soul in love, joy and peace.
Stowell Lake Farm is an abundant container of natural beauty and nourishment and rest.
Banafsheh is a noble, radiating being of love and beauty. Her commitment to divine embodiment through dance creates a reverent space for all to expand and dance the divine. Tony’s music is the heart beat of life pulsing love in every beat. An absolute to delight to be immersed in the flowing wonder he creates with such joy.

The Rose has long been the symbol of divine wisdom and the Chartres cathedral with its 3 sublime rose windows is a hymn to Mary as the throne of wisdom. Chartres Cathedral was built as a temple for the Queen of Heaven. This final rebuilding was dedicated to the risen Mary as her dwelling place on Earth. It is also a grail, the container of mysteries.

From ancient times, the rose has been associated with the great goddesses of the ancient world. The Rose is one of the oldest symbols of the wisdom tradition and of the divine wisdom and holy spirit radiating love to our world from the divine ground. The Rose came to symbolize not only the holy spirit but the awakened soul reunited with the divine ground. Mary was known in the middle ages at the time of the building of Chartres Cathedral as the Rosa Mystica. The rose represents the radiant presence of the holy spirit who fills the whole cathedral.

Mary as the divine feminine is the rose, the lily and also the tree of life from which all who turn to her can draw sustenance, an image that evokes the Shekinah and even older as Isis as the tree of life giving sustenance. Wherever the association is made between love and divinity, between beauty and harmony and divinity, between compassion and divinity, there stands the image of Mary as representing the qualities of the divine feminine.

This intensive is centered around the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) which honors the Church doctrine, enunciated by the Pope in 1950, that Mary was assumed directly into heaven upon her death and now presides as the Mother of God and the Queen of Heaven, a title held by Goddesses, Isis and Inanna. The much needed resurgence of the feminine archetype and the restoration and recovery of the feminine aspect of the divine in order to bring back wholeness and balance to the human psyche is the key to understanding the Feast of the Assumption which Carl Jung believed marked the most important development in Christian theology in the last 2000 years.

The Black Madonna

On the Day of the Assumption, a statue of the Black Madonna is carried through the streets of Chartres before being placed in front of the statue of the Assumption of Mary, where she is kept for one week and then hidden away till the following year.

Parading the Black Madonna recalls the way the Druids in ancient times brought her out of the grotto underneath the granite promontory upon which the cathedral today stands. They honored Mother Earth and the cycles of the seasons through the Black Madonna. The dark feminine in all her aspects has been revered since ancient times. The Black Madonna has historically been present during times of turbulence and upheaval when a culture or civilization is dying and something profound and redemptive is being born. The metamorphosis from the old to the new is uniquely the domain of the Black Madonna, which is why she is so actively present in our lives today. A profound aspect of the Black Madonna is the manner in which she challenges our understanding of what it means to be feminine.

Mary Magdalene

Mary of Magda is the other Mary of Chartres. As a powerful wisdom keeper, there is a hidden alliance between her and the Black Madonna. We will explore her sacred lineage and her teachings, contemplate images and statues of her in the cathedral, and prepare ourselves for the pilgrimage to the south of France where Mary is by tradition believed to have lived and taught when she came to France with her daughter Sara she had with Jesus and others who had been part of the early Christian community.

The Program

This program is primarily experiential and designed as an initiation into the Way of the Rose. Our intention is to heed the call of the Divine Feminine to see her around us and become her in our very cells so we can live in harmony with each other and with the Earth and all of the Earth community. We will integrate head, heart and body through wisdom teachings, song, dance and theater, and immersion in the imagery of the cathedral.

The week will be a balance of:
Wisdom teachings presentations on the Assumption; The Way of the Rose; Mother Mary as the incarnation of the Divine Feminine; the Black Madonna; the lineage and teachings of Mary Magdalene; and the Chartres Cathedral as a grail and container of mysteries.

Embodiment practices that bring us into heart presence and open a door for us to become the wisdom teachings we explore through meditation, sacred dance, ritual, singing, theater, and sharing circles.

A virtual immersion in the Chartres Cathedral – consisting of an in-depth exploration of the references to Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, the Assumption, the Black Madonna and the crypt, the labyrinth and the rose windows.

“She is one whose heart keeps pace with her foot. She is entirely present; her soul is where her body is, and her body where her soul is, and her soul where her soles are.”
– Junayd

As the restrictions gradually lift and many of us begin to emerge, hopefully with care and consideration for the bigger community, the question is who are we now? What have we discovered in our Khalvat, in our retreat, our seclusion? There is no going back to normal as our collective normal was unsustainable and what led to the crisis in the first place. So what is the alternative? This question is bringing many of us together to envision change, and to co-create a future that is sustainable for all of the Earth community.

For us dancers and lovers of the Dance, the change begins in ourselves, for we need to be that which we strive to create. This is what inspired me to create this 8-Week intensive with the aim of each one of us claiming our power in the queendom/kingdom of our body as an embodied channel of love in tenderness and strength, compassion and courage, so we can co-create a world in harmony with the divine laws of nature.

We are blessed to have all the wonders of the universe right here in our body – operating mostly without our conscious awareness. What happens, then, when you DO bring your conscious awareness to your breath, your movement, your organs and your energy? How much more effective can you become? And how much more connected, joyous and whole?

Tune into the wisdom of your body and dance the miracle that you are, this gift of life! In the uncertain times we live in, sacred dance is the way to a dynamic, joyous and energetic way of being that grounds us in the present moment and opens our heart and mind to wonder and possibility, so we can usher in a NEW paradigm of being in harmony with the greater Earth community.

Guided by the poetry of Rumi, Rabia, Kabir and other Sufi mystics as well as Taoist philosophy and divine feminine wisdom, explore the foundations of Dance of Oneness, and how to cultivate presence, mastery and sensual grace in your body through dancing with a focus on the Chakras, the Meridian system, and quantum physics. Integrate your body, heart, mind and soul in a sacred union and learn tools for self-healing, and extending love and healing into the world.

Each week we will journey into one of the Chakras through guided dance and movement that correspond to the Chakra in focus; free-style dance, meditation, wisdom teachings from the East & West, and optional participation in a sharing circle with a community of like-hearted, wild, noble people. In our 8th week, we will integrate our learning. The dance and movement styles we will explore are: Persian classical and mystical dance, Flamenco fusion, Middle Eastern tribal dances, Sama (whirling) and Tai Chi. Join our dance community right from your sanctuary, liberate your body and step into your unlimited self, extending love toward yourself, the Earth and all beings.

This Intensive is a foundational Dance of Oneness course and fulfills 26 hours in the 200-hr Dance of Oneness Certification Program. It is a prerequisite for The 8 Boughs – Chakras of the Divine Feminine Intensive offered in the Fall 2020.
